Abstract

The turn of the 19th – 20th centuries is a special time in the history of Russian art. For the work of V. E. Borisov-Musatov it is a significant stage, the period of the blossoming of his genius, the time of search and comprehension completion of his own artistic language, the choice and focus on the key theme – the portrayal of female characters, which became iconic for his work. The article presents a philosophical and art history analysis of the works “Self-Portrait with Sister” in 1898 and “Requiem” in 1905. These works are representative of the master’s creativity and certain milestones on the way of searching and comprehending the issues of spirituality through female images visualization. “Self-Portrait with Sister” is the first work where “Musatov’s girl” appears, “Requiem” is the last one
