Abstract

In the article, the spheres of Chinese migrants’ presence in Russian cities are examined on the base of empirical material. This presence used to be on the periphery of research interest, such as catering, consumer services, and education. Since the late 20th century, the presence of Chinese migrants in Russian cities has traditionally been associated with trading in the marketplaces. But currently the marketplaces themselves and the migrants’ locations around them have changed. As for Chinese presence in Russian cities, it has become more dispersed. Markets, having undergone significant changes, are no longer the main place of Chinese in the city. The markers of Chinese presence are shifting from areas where Chinese goods are sold to places where Chinese services are sold. These places become the attraction points for migrants and form platforms for their internal consolidation, which plays a key role in maintaining national identity. The discursive practices of local residents that attribute the status of “Chinese” to certain places and territories are noted in the article as well as new ways of migrants’ consolidation. They are important signs that form new migrant localities. For example, WeChat through which migrants carry out all necessary communications
