Abstract

The issue of preserving and transmitting scientific knowledge has worried mankind since ancient times. All sorts of methods, technologies, forms suitable for solving this problem have been created throughout the history of mankind. Currently, there is a scientific direction called “encyclopedic” that studies a wide range of all sorts of collections, assemblies, repositories of centuries-old human knowledge in various fields. The purpose of this article is to identify, through cultural analysis, the features of director’s encyclopedias, considered not only from the standpoint of the form and content of knowledge collected in them, but also as a self-sufficient cultural phenomenon. Cinema, like other areas of art, is quite difficult to confine within the rigid framework of classifications and typologies, just as it is done with phenomena studied within the framework of natural science research, exact sciences, in this regard, the selection of knowledge necessary to fill the director’s encyclopedia is a specific process. The result of this study is the disclosure of the specifics of director’s encyclopedias as a cultural phenomenon
