Abstract

The paper considers the fundamental possibility of quantitative recovery of platinum group metals from alloys obtained by melting automotive catalysts with an iron collector. The process is based on high-temperature chlorination (1000 °C) using gaseous HCl as a chlorine source. It is shown that the proposed method allows transferring up to 99.8 % of platinum metals into solution. The high degree of recovery is achieved due to the fact that the implemented conditions contribute to the breakdown of poorly soluble forms of compounds formed during the melting of spent automobile neutralizers
