Abstract

The article presents a linguocultural analysis of anthroponyms from the Shangodin subdialect, the least numerous within the Andalal dialect of the Avar language. The research addresses a gap in Dagestan studies, which have given insufficient attention to anthroponyms of specific patois, dialects, or subdialects. The article investigates the reasons behind the changes in the composition of the subdialect’s anthroponymicon. It presents an analysis of the ethnocultural processes and trends that have shaped its formation. Furthermore, the study describes the linguocultural components that have entered the subdialect’s anthroponymicon from other cultures, namely Arabic, Persian, and Turkic. Over ninety percent of the borrowed male names in the subdialect are of Arabic origin, linked to the spread of Islam in Dagestan. A characteristic feature of native male personal names in the subdialects of the Andalal dialect is that each subdialect possesses a unique set of names. These names are so distinct from those of other subdialects that a person’s personal name can serve as an identifier of their specific subdialect
