Abstract

The article examines the linguistic description of the routinization of cultural trauma associated with the Spanish Civil War in the collective memory of the Spanish people. The routinization process occurs in three stages: 1) the formation of a “language of trauma” through the actualization of the nature of pain, images of victims and antagonists, and the establishment of intergenerational connections; 2) the consolidation of diachronic linguocognitive patterns of memory; 3) the use of a range of figures of speech that transform historical facts into ethical categories. This routinization results in the creation of a socio-memorial framework for the collective memory of the Civil War, complemented by the personal recollections of society members. The authors conclude that contemporary Spanish cinema discourse functions as an active actor in the politics of memory, providing space for the routinization of collective memories of the traumatic event and constructing a new collective identity for democratic Spain
