Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of toponyms associated with organoleptic perceptions, primarily gustatory (from Latin gustare – “taste”; bitter, sweet, salty, sour, etc.), in the context of ethnolinguistics. Organoleptic toponyms are considered as metaphorical reflections of cultural experience and symbolism embedded in language. The aim is to identify the typology, semantics and functions of organoleptic toponyms, with further determining their place in the formation of the national and cultural worldview. The methodological basis of the work is the functional-typological analysis following the works of Professor V. N. Popova, which made it possible to classify toponyms and reveal their characteristics. The scientific relevance is the interpretation of organoleptic toponyms as metaphorical markers of ethnic identity, fixing the sensory and cultural associations of a people in space. The authors pay particular attention to the works of Professor V. N. Popova, whose longitudinal research (a card index for the Dictionary of Geographical Names, a map of the Pavlodar region, Reference Book of Street Names in Shymkent) are integrated into the broad context of ethnolinguistics and based on the achievements of Kazakh, Turkic and Slavic onomasticians
