- Abstract
This article examines the historical dynamics of the status of the master artist in art theory, drawing on the theory of fine art by V. I. Zhukovsky and N. P. Koptseva. The authors analyze the artist’s status – from mythological prototypes to artist-prophets and heroes, from the artist’s emergence as a unique individual to the contemporary status of the master artist. The role of the artist as a bearer of collective tradition in the Middle Ages and the relationship between canon and innovation in their craft are explored. Levels of mastery – mastery, super mastery, and meta mastery – are identified, along with their universality across artists of different eras
