- Abstract
This article is theoretical. It is devoted to consideration of the history of the study of cultural memory in foreign socio-humanitarian knowledge: from the view of it as an individual property of a person, but largely determined by the social framework, to a memory constructed from the outside and presented on a certain material medium, which is significantly influenced by the socio-cultural context. The paper examines key researchers of cultural memory and their interpretation of this concept; the research approaches they apply to certain research materials. The scope of the review chronologically covers the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Due to breaks in memory research, or due to historical events, ideological shifts and changes in the methodological paradigm, “waves” of memory research in world practice are identified, the particular optics of each stage are considered
