Abstract

This article presents characterization of the phenomenon of the Siberian izba – reading house and demonstrates its role in the construction of new educational practices and Soviet identity during the formation of the Soviet state. The factual material (regional periodicals in Krasnoyarsk region and archival documents) allows us to assert that the izba-reading house in the 1920s and 1930s was positioned as a multifunctional institution that purposefully shaped a new sociocultural reality in the countryside; it facilitated the integration of remote Siberian territories into the Union space, becoming not only an instrument of Soviet educational policy but also a part of the social world of the rural community. The identified complex of historical practices has significant potential for creative adaptation in the activities of modern rural libraries, clubs, and community leisure centers in the context of the formation of new models of cultural policy
