- Abstract
The article examines the illustrative tradition of Cervantes’s novel “Don Quixote” as a dynamic system of graphic interpretations, in which the hero’s image evolves in connection with changing artistic styles and various cultural and historical contexts. This study explores the transformation of the Don Quixote visual image from the 17th to the 19th centuries and analyzes the semantic accents of novel illustrators from different eras and national schools. The material for the undertaken analysis was three representative editions: the Dutch illustrated edition of 1657 (J. Savery III), the Madrid academic edition of 1780 (J. del Castillo, A. Carnicero, F. Selma, and others), and the Parisian edition of 1863 (G. Doré). The study was conducted within the framework of a hermeneutic approach and involves a comparative analysis allowing to identify the stylistic features and national- cultural characteristics of the Cervantes’s hero images. The creation of illustrations is considered as an intersemiotic translation, which involves the transmission of information from a verbal original by means of non-verbal semiotic systems
