Abstract

The article examines the evolution of the concept of “artistic image” in the history of art, aesthetics, and philosophy. It provides a historical overview of the concept, as well as related terms such as the artist and viewer, from ancient eidetic forms to medieval symbolism, from mimesis to classical German aesthetics, and from semiotics to contemporary neuroaesthetics. The authors suggest supplementing the traditional theory of fine arts based on Koptseva-Zhukovsky’s work with the findings of this analysis, in line with current research on contemporary artistic forms. With regard to the “artist” category, they note the transformation of the notion of skill within the context of artists’ collaboration with new media and materials. Regarding the “viewer” category, it is viewed as the most dynamic, representing a cognitively and physically active subject that requires consideration of both psychological and neurobiological mechanisms. Finally, the «artistic image» concept extends and acquires features of a simulated environment, agency, and interactivity within the context of contemporary art forms. Based on this, the study concludes that the Koptseva- Zhukovsky theory holds validity, considering new media and current research findings
